The 24/7 overload many of us feel in work and life

The 24/7 overload many of us feel in work and life is real. People reach out to me to discuss a multitude of topics, and when the onion is peeled, what lies beneath is usually the need for a reset of focus, mindset, and intentionality.

If you are nodding your head in agreement or feel that what I stated resonates with you, a book you might enjoy exploring is “Focused Fundraising—How to Raise Your Sights and Overcome Overload” by Christopher M. Cannon and Michael Felberbaum. My favorite sentence in the book is, “Doing a lot can seem like doing something important.” How true! A question to ask yourself is, what is valued in your organization?

Some nuggets in the book follow:
- “… Your biggest challenge is not fundraising technique – your challenge is finding time.” Pg vii
- “Mindfulness does not slow things down; it strengthens purpose.” Pg 17
- “A strong sense of purpose naturally diminishes distraction.” Pg 49
- “…Get creative with how you say no.” Pg 88
- “Great teams – focused teams – live their strategies because of their culture.” Pg 117
- “Focused fundraising moves the organization (and individual) from productivity to purpose.” Pg 173
- “You are a person first and a worker second.” Pg 190

“Focused Fundraising” provides a number of frameworks, like the RAISE framework, to help you elevate your level of focus. It also reinforces the need for intention, purpose, and habit. For those in higher education and in the nonprofit fundraising sector, there is a lot of additional information in this book about prospect management in a 24/7 world and engagement strategies with the advent of modern technology. There is also a helpful toolkit at the back of the book with prompts and questions. In a nutshell, the overriding message I took away when reading this book is that in the midst of back-to-back meetings and 20+ emails an hour, the power of pause and intention wins the day.
